Planning your tours

Ride Santader lists guided and supported cycling tours around Santader in Catalonia, from a two-hour e-bike ride through the old town to a three-day Pyrenees camp. Every tour is shown with its distance and climbing so you can compare like with like. Use the filters for bike type, difficulty and duration, or browse by place, then follow the link to the partner that runs the ride and check dates there.

How to choose between the rides

Start with climbing rather than distance. The easiest rides on this site stay under 300 m of ascent, while the hardest pass 1,150 m in a single day and the Pyrenees camp totals 7,400 m over three days. Next, decide on surface: road bikes suit the coast and the big climb, gravel suits forest and volcanic tracks, and the e-bike ride keeps the old town relaxed. If you are unsure, the riverside gravel intro and the greenway day are the gentlest ways to start.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for long days in the saddle in Catalonia. Summer brings strong heat by midday, so the long coast and climbing rides work best with early starts and plenty of water. Winter days are short and mountain roads can be cold or icy, which matters most for the high passes. Gravel tracks can turn muddy after heavy rain, so check the weather forecast a few days before you ride and read the partner's cancellation terms.

Getting there and getting around

Santader works as a base because most routes start in or close to the city, and the greenway and riverside tracks begin from the urban edge. For the coast and the Pyrenees, check the partner's meeting point and whether transfers or van support are included. Many riders arrive via Barcelona or Girona airports, then continue by train or road. Allow time on the first morning to collect bikes, adjust the saddle and cleat position, and sign any waivers.

What to bring

Bring a helmet if the partner does not supply one, padded shorts, gloves, sunglasses and a light packable jacket, since weather changes quickly on climbs. Carry at least two bottles on full days and some snacks for between stops. Gravel days call for shoes you can walk in, while road riders should bring clipless pedals or ask whether flat pedals can be fitted. Check in advance which items, such as bikes, spares and lunch, the partner provides.

Why ride with us

Questions before you book

Which tour is best for a beginner?

The Riverside Gravel Intro and the Greenway Easy Day are the gentlest, with 250 m and 180 m of climbing. The Old Town E-Bike Ride is easier still, with motor assistance.

Do I need to bring my own bike?

It depends on the partner running each tour. Check the tour page and the partner's details for which bikes, helmets and spares are included before booking.

How fit do I need to be?

Easy tours need no special training. Moderate and hard tours involve 1,000 m or more of climbing in a day, so regular rides of three to five hours are sensible preparation.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Rain, wind or heat can change or cancel a ride. Cancellation and rebooking rules are set by the partner, so read them before you book.

When is the best time of year to ride?

Spring and autumn are usually most comfortable. Summer is hot at midday, and winter days are short, with cold conditions at altitude.

Who runs the tours?

Each tour is run by a partner company. This site compares and describes them, and you complete your booking with the partner through the link.
